A fetch machine that does the throwing. Your dog drops the ball into the funnel, the launcher fires it back out across the garden, and the game keeps going long after your shoulder would normally have ended it. Runs on batteries, 30 cm across, four colours.

Your arm gives out long before the dog does

Twenty throws in, your shoulder is telling you something. The dog is not. She is already back, ball at your feet, doing the small impatient bounce she does, entirely unaware that this is a two-party arrangement and one party is finished. So you throw six more, badly, and then you say the word — enough — and she carries the ball around for another ten minutes in case you change your mind. It is the same on Tuesday. It is the same in the rain, in the dark, and on the mornings you have somewhere to be at nine.

An under-exercised dog finds its own entertainment

The problem with a fetch session that ends early is not the fetch. It is the four hours afterwards. A dog with unspent energy does not sit quietly with it — it goes looking for the skirting board, the post that comes through the door, the leg of the good chair. Owners describe exactly this trade in reviews: the arm wears out first, the dog stays wired, and the evening gets more expensive than a toy would have been. There is also the ball itself, which by throw fifteen has been in a mouth fifteen times and is no longer something you want to hold.

A launcher that takes over the throwing

This is a battery-powered ball launcher, 30 cm across and about 1.8 kg, moulded in ABS with a wide funnel on top. Your dog drops the ball in and the launcher fires it out across the garden; retrieve, drop, repeat. Once a dog has made the connection — and most do inside a session or two, usually by watching one loaded throw — the game becomes self-serve, which is the whole point: it runs at the dog’s pace rather than your shoulder’s, and you are not handling a wet ball between every throw. It comes in blue, green, yellow or orange, and batteries are included.

Best suited to a garden, a hall or an open park rather than a living room, and to a dog that already brings the ball back — a launcher will not teach the retrieve, it will only tire out a dog that has one. Start with short sessions and supervise the first few: a dog that has never seen a ball arrive without a human attached takes a minute to work out where to stand. It is one of the pieces we single out in our guide to pet gadgets that make life with a pet easier.
