Set this apple slicer over an apple, press down on both handles, and you get eight wedges with the core pushed out in one motion. Eight stainless blades radiate from a central coring ring inside a 15.5 cm frame, so a lunchbox apple becomes one press rather than a knife, a board and a rinse.

The apple that has to be cut before anyone will eat it

Whole apples come back from school untouched. Cut into wedges, they get eaten. So there you are at seven in the morning with a paring knife, holding a round, wet fruit that wants to roll off the board, taking four uneven cuts and then chasing the core out of each piece with the tip of the blade. Then the board, then the knife, then the sticky fingers.

It is a small job you do again tomorrow

Five mornings a week, plus the ones after school, plus the apple you meant to eat at your desk and did not because it was whole. Each round takes a knife, a board and a rinse, and a rolling apple and a sharp blade are a poor combination when you are hurrying. Cut badly, you leave good flesh on the core and end up with two thick wedges and six thin ones that brown at different rates.

An apple slicer that does the coring and the cutting in one press

Eight stainless steel blades radiate from a central ring inside a moulded frame 15.5 cm across and 10.2 cm front to back. Stand the apple stem up, seat the ring over the core, put a hand on each side handle and push straight down. The ring punches the core out while the blades open the fruit into eight even wedges, in one movement. The two handles keep your hands outside the blade circle and let you push with both palms rather than your fingertips. It is one of the plainer kitchen gadgets we stock: no motor, nothing to charge, nothing to go wrong in a drawer.

What it does well

  • Coring and slicing in the same motion. The central ring pushes the core out as the eight blades cut, so there is no second pass with a knife.
  • Even wedges. Eight blades fixed in a frame cut the same thickness every time, which matters when the wedges are going into a lunchbox and have to brown at the same rate.
  • Two moulded side handles. They sit outside the blade circle, so you push with both hands and your fingers stay away from the steel.
  • Not only apples. Pears go the same way. Firm vegetables such as potatoes, onions or peppers, trimmed to apple size, will also go through, though they take a harder push.
  • Sent from within the United States. Unusually for our catalogue, this one does not travel from an overseas partner, and the delivery estimate on this page reflects that.

Worth knowing before you order

The blade circle sits inside the 15.5 cm frame, so this is sized for a medium apple; an unusually large one will not seat and is better halved first. Like most push-style slicers it can leave a thin bridge of skin at the base, which the wedges snap apart. The blades are fixed and sharp, so wash it with them facing away. Sold singly, in black.

Why order it now rather than the next school morning

There is another lunchbox tomorrow, and one the day after. Whole apples keep coming home uneaten until slicing one stops being a knife, a board and a rinse. Unusually for our catalogue this one ships from within the United States, and the estimate on this page is the real carrier quote — our returns and refund policy covers a refund or a replacement if it is still missing 30 days past that date.
