This sink strainer basket is a perforated stainless steel basket on a flat rim with a curved “swan” arm: the arm goes around the base of your faucet and the basket hangs in the sink, holding the peelings and food scraps you drop into it so they don’t go down the drain. It comes in a small and a large size.
The part of doing the dishes nobody volunteers for
The plates are scraped, the pan is soaking, and somewhere at the bottom of the sink is the part of the job nobody wants: a wet handful of peelings and leftovers, half of it already in the drain.
The drain basket fills, and the rest goes down the pipe
The little basket in the drain fills up fast and has to be picked out by hand. Scraps that miss it go down the pipe. And a bowl on the counter for scraps is one more thing to wash.
How the sink strainer basket works
Rest the rim at the edge of the sink with the curved arm around the base of the faucet, so the basket hangs down into the sink. Scrape plates and drop peelings into it as you work; water drains out through the small holes in the bottom. The supplier doesn’t give the hole size, so very fine bits may pass through. When it’s full, lift it out by the rim and empty it into the trash. The supplier also shows it used for rinsing cherry tomatoes under the faucet. The edge is smooth and rounded. More kitchen fixes are in kitchen gadgets.
What it does well
- A kitchen sink food catcher by the faucet. Scraps go into the basket instead of the drain.
- A hanging sink strainer, not a drain plug. It hangs in the sink from the faucet base, and the scraps you drop in stay in the basket instead of going down the drain.
- A sink waste basket that lifts out. Lift it by the rim and tip the scraps into the trash.
- A stainless steel sink basket with a perforated bottom. Water drains through the holes in the bottom.

Who it suits — and who it doesn’t
It suits a kitchen sink with the faucet mounted on the sink deck near the edge of the bowl, and anyone who wants scraps kept out of the drain while doing the dishes. It doesn’t suit a faucet mounted on the wall or set far back from the bowl, because the arm needs to go around the faucet base. The supplier doesn’t give the size of the arm’s curve. Going by its drawings, the rim and arm reach about 12 cm (4.72 in) beyond the basket on the small size and about 10 cm (3.94 in) on the large, so compare that with the distance from your faucet base to the sink bowl.
Questions people ask
How do you use a swan sink strainer basket?
Put the curved arm around the base of the faucet so the basket hangs in the sink. Drop scraps in as you do the dishes, then lift it out by the rim and empty it.
Which size should I choose?
The small basket is 10 cm (3.94 in) across and the large is 14 cm (5.51 in); both are 6 cm (2.36 in) deep. Choose the large if you peel a lot of vegetables, the small if your sink is narrow.
Worth knowing before you order
Fit depends on your faucet: the arm has to reach around its base, and the curve’s size isn’t stated. The supplier calls it stainless steel but gives no steel grade or rust rating.
Next time you do the dishes
There are scraps in the sink after every meal. With the basket hanging by the faucet, they have somewhere to go that isn’t the drain.
